MAIN ARGUMENTS OF MY THESIS

  1. The modern world has many benefits, but it's also causing a lot of stress and disconnection among people.

  2. The term 'human' suggests that we are beings deeply connected to the earth, but modern society often forgets this connection.

  3. There are clear signs (like mental health issues and a pervasive sense of meaninglessness) that our current way of life isn't working well for many people.

  4. We are often encouraged to adjust to a system that might be fundamentally unhealthy, causing us to lose sight of what genuinely makes us happy and fulfilled.

  5. We need to consider radically rethinking our societal system to prioritize well-being over progress.

  6. While changing the world may seem overwhelming, we can start by changing ourselves. This personal evolution can lead to broader societal transformation.

  7. By reconnecting with nature and tapping into our 'Natural Wisdom,' we can find personal healing, growth, and a sense of wholeness.

  8. Incorporating ancestral wisdom and the intelligence nature, along with primal skills can help us navigate the complexities of the modern world and lead to a deeper, more meaningful life.

  9. This journey may be challenging, but the rewards—personal growth, deeper connection, and a life full of meaning and purpose—are well worth it.

  10. Natural Wisdom offers an invitation that is open to everyone to become active participants in their own life, contribute to global transformation, and rediscover their roots.

THE THESIS: DIAGNOSING THE PROBLEMS

In the relentless march of the modern world, I've found myself wrestling with a growing disillusionment. Don't mistake this sentiment as a complete dismissal of modernity. Indeed, it has bestowed us with invaluable benefits and conveniences that our ancestors could only dream of. Yet, an alarming paradox has become increasingly clear: as our world surges ahead, the scales have tipped ominously, with the shadows of the 'bad' eclipsing the glimmers of the 'good.'

Take a moment to look around. Perhaps you, like many others, are feeling the crushing weight of this societal contradiction. A widespread sense of fragmentation and disorientation pervades our collective existence, leaving us frazzled and weary from life's relentless pace. Most people I meet these days are just ‘life tired’. This isn't an exaggeration but a stark reality painted by a society out of sync with its HUMANity.

Let's pause and delve into the word 'HUMAN'. What does it truly mean to be 'human'? The origin of this word provides a profound insight. Traced back to Latin, 'human' is believed to be a combination of 'homo', signifying 'man', and 'humus', representing 'earth'. This etymology powerfully symbolizes a human as a being 'firmly rooted to the earth', a connection as natural and inevitable as a tree to its soil.

Let's absorb the profundity of that idea: A human being is not merely a creation of circumstance, but an entity 'firmly rooted to the earth.' We are, essentially, beings of the earth, shaped by its rhythms and cycles, designed to flourish upon its abundant canvas. This primordial connection doesn't tie us to the trappings of modernity, to technology or materialism, but to the grounding essence of the earth itself.

This doesn't deny the conveniences and advancements offered by our modern era, but it emphasizes the importance of preserving our inherent link with nature. It serves as a reminder to rebalance our lives, to reestablish that vital connection with our true habitat, the earth. For it is in this rediscovery, this reconnection, that we might find the pathway to genuine fulfilment, balance, and well-being.

But all is not well…

Modern Society's Canary in the Coal Mine: Diagnosing a World in Disquiet

The metaphor "canaries in the coal mine" paints a vivid picture of our current societal predicament. Once a real practice in mining, where the health of a canary signalled the presence of harmful gases, it now portrays a sobering reality of our modern world. Today, our metaphorical canaries are the alarming rise in mental health issues, the pervasive sense of meaninglessness, especially among young adults, and the escalating reliance on mood-altering drugs like antidepressants. These distress signals point to a profound, systemic malaise in our contemporary way of life.

In an age where the self-help industry is flourishing and pharmaceutical fixes for emotional states are the norm, these warning signals compel us to pause, reflect, and interrogate our reality's underpinnings. Are the societal structures we abide by fundamentally flawed? Have we, somewhere along our pursuit of progress, lost sight of the essence of human well-being?

Our societal norms, reflected in the prolific self-help literature and the increasing use of pharmaceutical treatments, push us towards a vision of 'normality' and 'happiness.' These pathways, ironically, are products of a system that simultaneously induces the stress, anxiety, and discontent we seek to overcome. A quote from the philosopher Jiddu Krishnamurti rings ominously true, "It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society."

The predicament we face is less about individuals failing to adapt, and more about a system that mandates adjustment to an inherently unhealthy and unsustainable way of life. We're caught in a vicious cycle, constantly nudged to fit into a mould that is itself damaging and deeply flawed.

We have built taller buildings but harbour shorter tempers, created wider freeways but possess narrower viewpoints. We spend more, yet have less; buy more, yet enjoy less, as the comedian George Carlin once astutely observed. As we race in the pursuit of progress, we seem to have misplaced the essence of what brings genuine contentment and fulfilment.

The solution isn't a minor tweak, a mere reshaping of our existing system. It's not about clinging to the status quo, nor about romanticizing 'the good old days.' The true resolution of our societal crisis lies in a radical reimagining of the system itself, a complete overhaul that prioritizes human well-being over mere performance and progress.

This diagnosis of our modern dilemma serves as an urgent wake-up call. Just as miners would heed the distress of their canaries, we must pay attention to our metaphorical canaries—the pervasive mental health issues, the loss of meaning, and our dependence on mood-altering drugs.

The question now remains: will we continue to ignore these distress signals, or will we dare to redefine what it means to lead a truly meaningful, fulfilling, and healthy life?

WHERE TO START?

Our world is at a critical juncture, with widespread discontent and malaise threatening to overshadow the beauty and potential of our shared human experience. The grim reality is that, on a global scale, rapid transformation is not forthcoming. We are ensnared by the tendrils of greed, self-centeredness, and hubris that maintain our collective inertia.

Yet, while the enormity of these challenges might feel overwhelming, I believe there remains a potent source of change within each of us: ourselves. When systemic revolution seems unattainable, personal evolution is not only possible; it's the only way. Herein lies our capacity to rise above our current circumstances and create a life of profound meaning and purpose.
